Insomnia is the chronic ability of not being able to sleep.
Many have sleepless nights but are able to get sleep, that is not insomnia. People that suffer from insomnia never get a restful night of sleep. Often times get at the very most 2 hours of sleep each night. The person is very tired, but are unable to sleep naturally. It all depends on a person's surroundings in many cases.
Twenty-five percent of Americans suffer from this disorder. There are several causes leading up to insomnia. Working different shifts or erratic change in work schedule can cause insomnia. Jet lag is a big factor in causing insomnia, especially with America always on the go. A death, causing much grief will often induce insomnia. This type of insomnia however usually passes with time. It depends on how close the person was to the one that passed on and how severe the grief is for the person.
Depression as well as anxiety or stress can also lead to it, but needs to be depicted from the difference of normal not being able to sleep. Nicotine, alcohol, or caffeine can cause insomnia if taken in large quantites. Elderly people also suffer from insomnia eighty-five percent of the time, and it’s simply due to the change in age.
Treatment for insomnia is much in the prevention of certain things during daily life. A person leading a high stress or a high risk lifestyle is much more prone to insomnia.
No stimulants, such as nicotine, caffeine, alcohol, at least eight hours prior to going to bed will help prevent sleepless nights. Smoking should be cut out completely. It not only keeps a person alert, nicotine's long lasting effects keep a person awake. Learning relation techniques is a plus. Exercise such as yoga or listening to calming music is a good way to relax. Medication is used as a last resort. There are several over the counter types that can be purchased, but should always read the labeling information. Doctors have prescribed antidepressants to
also help a person sleep with more ease.
Typically there is always a reason a person can not sleep. Finding out the reason will be the best key to a restfull night.
