There are so many reasons why a baby will wake up during the night. To name just a few; need for food, attention, a wet diaper, losing his pacifier, to name a few. I have a few helpful hints to help with making babies sleep better and also to help your sleeping also.
First of all you probably need to relax and try to grab sleep whenever you can, and please do trust your own judgement and if necessary call your doctor if you feel it is a serious situtation.
Your baby will have "active" sleep period and "quiet" sleep periods. During the "active" sleep you can see rapid eye movement. Then during the "quiet" sleep there won't be eye or body movement.
Before bedtime make sure your baby is well fed and not hungry, then try giving baby a nice warm bath before bedtime; massage his or her body very gently using baby lotion or oils. These will help the baby to relax and fall asleep easily. Cuddle your baby before bedtime, sing him a soft lullaby, or just keep things very low key.
If your baby wakes up during the night try to talk to him or her and perhaps stroke him or gently rock the bed then pick him up if this doesn't work. Don't try to keep the house totally quiet but still eliminate loud noises which aren't necessary at that time of the evening.
You might want to try some sounds to soothe baby, such as hearing your voice either in soft tones or in singing of lullabys. You might even want to run a fan not directed at the baby's bed but just to have a soft quiet noise in the room to lull him to sleep or perhaps to allow him to return to sleep. I know you must have heard about putting a ticking clock in the room, this is an older remedy but it still works, try this sometimes. Try putting a music box in the crib or a musical mobile, hearing the same soft sounds he is familiar with will help him to sleep also. There are many cassette tapes out on the market now to lull baby to sleep with soft sounds or music.
Try a few of these helpful hints and perhaps you and your child will get many nights of relaxing sleep. Sleep patterns can be formed in infants that last for a lifetime, don't forget that fact.
