Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by repetitive motions of the wrist or hand such as those made when sewing, typing, etc. The motions create pressure on the nerves which pass through a narrow opening in the bones of the wrist (the carpal tunnel). This causes fluid to accumulate within the tissues and put pressure on the nerve inside the carpal tunnel.

The symptoms of this ailment are numbness and tingling in fingers, with swelling and inflammation of the wrist or hand and sometimes pain up into the arm and shoulders. In many cases the symptoms will disappear after discontinuing the repetitive motion but usually this is only temporary and when the motion is again used, the discomfort returns. In serious cases, surgery may be needed but may not result in permanent relief. Wrist braces and handrests are useful aids when attempting to reduce the symptoms and prevent further damage.

Some foods are said to be of benefit those suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome by strengthening muscle tissues and reducing tissue inflammation. Studies have shown that eating flaxseed will reduce tissue inflammation. Flaxseed contains antioxidant substances that block the action of free radicals that cause inflammation.

Ground flaxseed can be found at most health food stores. Whole flaxseed cannot be digested by the human body and must be ground before it is consumed. Ground flaxseed can be mixed into hot cereals of sifted into flour for baking.

Foods rich in vitamin B6 are also known to lessen the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. These foods include peanuts, bananas, tuna, beef, herring, pork, chicken and cauliflower. The absorption of vitamin B6 may be lowered if these foods or B6 supplements are taken by persons who are elderly or who use alcohol in excess. In cases such as this, a physician may prescribe higher dosages.

Another way of using diet to help control carpal tunnel syndrome is by ridding the body of excess weight. Studies show that people who are overweight have a greater risk for carpal tunnel syndrome since they accumulate more fluid in the body's tissues than others. Cutting calories and eating foods that help to rid the body of excess fluids, such as citrus fruits and fresh vegetables can do a great deal to reduce the amount of pressure on the effected nerves.
